Why does whois sometimes say a domain is available when it is taken?

Registries rate-limit WHOIS by source IP, and a throttled response often contains the same words as a not-found one. A naive parser reads the rate-limit message as "no match" and reports the domain as free. dotsweep checks the throttle phrasing first and reports an unreachable registry as unconfirmed, never as available, because that is the only wrong answer that costs somebody money.

Is the advertised per-year price what I actually pay?

Not always. Some registries sell no term shorter than several years while every registrar still advertises the per-year figure — .ai is quoted at $82.70 and cannot be bought for less than $165.40, because the registry deals only in two-year terms. dotsweep multiplies by the registry's minimum term and leads with what actually leaves your account.

Am I allowed to register any extension I like?

No. Some extensions require a local presence, a trademark or a professional licence, and several hundred are .brand registries reserved for one trademark owner and sell to nobody. dotsweep reports the requirement alongside availability, citing the registry's own policy page and the date it was read.
